Updating an existing mosaic

With the Mosaic Update Preparation module, you can update an existing mosaic using new imagery. In many instances, you may have a previously generated image mosaic (output from the Mosaic Generation module) when new, updated imagery becomes available. After you process the new imagery up to the point of mosaicking, you can include it in the existing mosaic.

This process is particularly useful when the existing mosaic contains holes, and the holes represent areas where no data currently exists. Holes are typically caused when "bad" pixels (pixels representing clouded or hazy regions) are excluded from the mosaic. You can add the new, cloud-free imagery from the same area to the existing mosaic to update the areas with missing data, and keep the image mosaic current.

Much like the Mosaic Preparation module, the Mosaic Update Preparation module prepares the data to mosaic by computing the color-balancing coefficients, cutlines, and image order. The output of this module is essentially equivalent to that of the Mosaic Preparation module: color-balancing coefficients and cutlines are computed, and a new source image list file (.xml) is created. The module differs from the Mosaic Preparation module in that it processes only the tiles of the existing mosaic affected by the new imagery. You can, therefore, regenerate and update the mosaic without having to reprocess all the data.
