Setting the divisions of the scale bar

A scale bar is separated into sections called divisions. Divisions represent the actual ground distances as displayed in an Area. To provide a greater degree of accuracy, you can provide smaller increments by subdividing a division, as shown in the following example. Divisions and subdivisions can display headings that indicate the distance in the selected measurement unit.

To set the divisions of the scale bar

  1. In the Scale bar Properties window, click the Division tab.
  2. Under Divisions, make sure the Automatic divisions check box is selected.

To manually set the number of divisions, clear the Automatic divisions check box, type or select the number of divisions that you want in the Number of divisions box. In the Division size box, type or select a value to represent the real distances on the ground that the division covers, and then in the list to the right, select a unit of measurement.

To display a unit of measurement on the scale bar and set which tick represents zero, click Advanced. For more information, see Labeling a scale bar with a unit of measurement and setting a zero tick.

  3. Under Headings, make sure the Show headings check box is selected.
  4. Beside Style, click the button, and then create a style for the heading (see Selecting a style).
  5. Beside Placement, do one of the following:
    • To display the headings on top of the divisions, click Top.
    • To display the headings on the bottom of the divisions, click Bottom.
Note: With the scale-bar type Line and Tick selected, ticks are placed on the same side as the headings.
  6. In the Distance from scale bar box, type or select a value to represent the space between the headings and scale bar, and then from the list to the right, select a unit of measurement.
