Setting up and running Rule-Based Classification

With Rule-based Classification, you can define a custom classification rule based on a specific property or properties of a segment. You can define a rule to either assign a class to segments that meet the requirements of the rule or remove the segments from the class.

The parameters for either assigning or removing a class are the same and described herein only once.

To set up and run Rule-based Classification

  1. In the Object Analyst window, in the list under Operation, select Rule-based Classification.

The display is refreshed to show the settings for rule-based classification.

  2. Under Vector Layer, click Select, and then in the Layer Selection window, do the following:
    1. In the File box, type or select the file you want.

If the file you want does not appear in the list, click Browse, and then select the file you want.

    2. In the Select column of the table, click the vector layer you want.

A check mark appears in the column.

    3. Click OK.
  3. Under Class Edit, do one of the following:
    • To assign a class to one or more segments, click Assign.
    • To remove a class from one or more segments, click Remove.
  4. Under Parameters, do the following:
    1. In the Class field list, select the field that contains the class-membership information you want or, to create a field, click Create.

You can create a field when classification has not been run previously and a suitable existing field is unavailable. For information on creating a field, see Creating a new layer field.

    2. In the Class filter list, select the name of the class field to either assign or remove, based on what you selected in step 2.
    3. In the New class list, type or select the class to assign to, or remove from, the polygons, based on what you selected in step 2.
  5. If you want to create and apply a condition for the rule-based classification, see Creating and applying a condition or Using attribute visualization, as applicable; otherwise, proceed to the next step.
  6. If you want to set up another rule after running the process, select the Stay on page check box.
  7. Do one of the following:
    • To add the operation to the Process Canvas box, click Add.
    • To add the operation to the canvas and run the process, click Add and Run.
