Mapping channels

You can control which channels in your output will be modified, and which input channels to use as the source of that modification.

In the Channel Mapping window, the Output Channel column in the table lists, by default, all of the channels in the file you are repairing. In the Input Channel column, the value indicates which channel will provide the source pixel values to copy. Typically, the input and output files have the same number of channels in the same arrangement; therefore, a basic one-to-one correspondence can be used to define the relationship.

However, you can also use channel mapping to manage more complicated scenarios. Start by defining which output channels you want to modify. For each, you then define the corresponding source channel. The value you enter for Channel count determines the total number of channels to modify. For example, if the output file has four channels, but the source you want to read from has only three, one channel must remain unchanged. Therefore, enter a value of 3 for Channel count, and then define the mapping you want from the output to the input.

Note: The bit depth of the input and output channels need not be the same. However, because the pixel values are not scaled, they are assumed to be of comparable magnitude. Therefore, it is valid, for example, to copy elevation values from a DEM channel that is 16-bit signed to one that is 32-bit real.

To map channels

  1. If you already have the Channel Mapping window open on the desktop, proceed to step 2; otherwise, on the toolbar, click Channel Mapping.

    The Channel Mapping window appears.

  2. In the Output Channel column of the table, click the output channel you want to map.
  3. In the Input Channel column, click the row of the input channel to which you want to map the output channel, and then in the list that appears, click the input channel you want.
  4. Repeat the two previous steps, as necessary, for each channel you want to map.
  5. To reduce the number of channels to modify, type or select the number you want in the Channel count box.
