Adjusting contrast and brightness

Interpreting image data is often made easier by adjusting the contrast and brightness of the image. You can increase, decrease, or reset the contrast or brightness of layers selected on the Maps tab. If no layers are selected, changes to brightness or contrast are applied to the active layer.

To adjust contrast and brightness

  1. Do any of the following to adjust the image contrast:
    • To increase the contrast, on the Enhancement toolbar, click Contrast.

Each click increases the contrast by approximately 10 percent.

    • To decrease the contrast, click the arrow beside Contrast, and then click Decrease Contrast.

The image contrast decreases by approximately 10 percent.

    • To return to the original contrast level, click the arrow beside Contrast, and then click Reset Contrast.
  2. Do any of the following to adjust the image brightness:
    • To increase the brightness, on the Enhancement toolbar, click Brightness.

Each click increases the brightness by approximately 10 percent.

    • To decrease the brightness, click the arrow beside Brightness, and then click Decrease Brightness.

The brightness decreases by approximately 10 percent.

    • To return to the original brightness level, click the arrow beside Brightness, and then click Reset Brightness.
Note: To change the brightness and contrast of multiple layers, each must be selected on the Maps tab, and each must be of the same type (either grayscale or RGB), and the bit depth of each must be the same.
