Using the Add Layer Wizard

When you want to add layers from other GDB-supported data sets, you can add vector, RGB, grayscale, pseudocolor, and bitmap layers to a project by using the Add Layer Wizard. The wizard helps you locate the specific layers you want and guides you through adding the selected layer type.

When you use the Add Layer Wizard, you need not have an active area in a map. The wizard automatically creates a new layer for you.

To use the Add Layer Wizard

  1. On the Maps tab, under the map to which you want to add a layer, right-click an area, and then click Add.
Tip: You can also, on the Layer menu, click Add.

The Add Layer Wizard window appears.

  2. Click the type of layer you want, and then click Next.
  3. In the Files available box, select the data file containing the raster channels you want.

If the raster file you want to use does not appear in the box, click Browse, and then select the file you want.

With a file selected in the Files available box, only channels of the specified type are displayed in the box below. For example, with a bitmap selected as the layer type you want to add, only bitmap channels are displayed. That is, the name of the box varies according to the type of layer you selected in step 2.

  4. In the box, select the item you want.
  5. Click Finish.

The new layer is added to the selected area.
