Creating a subset file

Before creating a subset or a clip, consider the output format. That is, by default, a subset file is based on the format of the source file. You can change the output format of a subset to any GDB-compatible data type. With some file types, you may want to add or remove information.

If necessary, you can also open a subset-script file. A subset-script file specifies the coordinates and output file names when you want to create several, separate, subset areas using the same definition. For information about the setup of a subset script, see Creating a subset script.

To create a subset file

  1. In the Subset File window, select a source file, if necessary.

That is, if you already have a file open in the File Utility window, the file appears as the source file in the Subset File window. If you do not have a file open, click Browse, and then select the source file you want.

  2. In the Destination file box, type the path and file name of the file you want or, to specify a file, click Browse.
Note: The output file must not already exist.
  3. In the Output format list, select a format for the output file.

The layers in the source file appear under Source Layers.

  4. If applicable, click Options to specify file creation options for the destination file.
  5. Beside Database Size, click Preview to show the subset in the preview pane.
  6. If you want to use a subset script you have created, click Script Subset, select the script file, and then proceed to step 8.
  7. Define the size and position of the subset area, as follows:
    • To define the subset area, click Square, Overview, or Bisect, as applicable.
    • To define the position of the subset area, drag the subset area to the location you want.

You can also use the arrow buttons to reposition the area.

    • From the unlabeled list, select how you want to define the boundaries.
You can select from the following:
      • Database Corners
      • Geocoded Corners
      • Long/Lat Corners
      • Database Offset/Size
      • Geocoded Offset/Size
Notice that, based on your selection, the labels of the text boxes below change accordingly.
    • Enter values for the boundaries, as applicable.
  8. If you want to include include vector layers in the output file, beside Selectable Layers, click Clip Vectors.
  9. Under Source Layers, select one or more layers to include in the output file and, if necessary, do one or more of the following:
    • To filter the list by layer type, in the View list, select the type you want.
    • To select all layers in the list, click Select All.

You can also select a group or range of layers.

  10. Click Add.

The layer or layers you selected appear under Destination Layers. To remove a layer or layers, select one or more, and then click Remove. To change the order of the layers, select one or more layers, and then click Up or Down, as applicable.

  11. Click Subset.

The subset file is created according to the defined parameters.
