About Generic Database file formats

Generic Database (GDB) is a technology that provides software programs with access to data in many geomatics formats, in a uniform manner, and without having to convert them before use. GDB includes access to imagery, vectors, attributes, projections, and other auxiliary information.

Each file format supported by GDB is implemented in the GDB library. All data types, and access approaches from the generic data model, are implemented seamlessly.

Not all formats support all data types or access approaches. That is, only PCIDSK (the format on which the data model is modeled) supports all possible data types. It is therefore important to recognize that some formats have limitations. Each supported file format, including limitations, is described in Supported file formats.
