Compensating for forests and urban areas

The repetitive textures of forests and urban areas often cause areas to contain failed values, noise, and poorly correlated elevation values. Focus provides you with the ability to compensate for such circumstances.

To compensate for forests and urban areas

  1. In Focus, open the file that contains the digital elevation model to modify.
Tip: You may want to also open some reference data to help you identify the areas in the DEM to edit.
  2. On the Maps tab, make sure the relevant DEM layer is selected, and then on the Layer menu, click DEM Editing.

    The DEM Editing window appears.

  3. On the Settings tab, under DEM Special Values, type a value in the Failed box, as applicable.
  4. Click the Edit via Bitmap tab, and then click the Create Mask Layer button.

To have all failed pixels in a mask identified, click the Mask Failed Pixels button.

  5. In the Filtering and Interpolation list, click Interpolate.
  6. Click Use Mask, and then click Apply.

If you want to remove the contents of the layer, click Clear Layer or, to save the layer, click Save.
