Creating buffers - step 1

In the first step of creating buffers, you determine the input, output, and buffer distances.

To complete step 1 of creating buffers

  1. Under Input, type or select a file name in File box.

    If no file is listed, click Browse, and then select the file you want.

  2. In the Layer box, type or select a layer.
  3. Under Output, do one of the following:
    • To see the results in the view pane without saving the new layer, click Display.
    • To save the new layer to your project, click Save.
    • By default, the saved results display in the view pane. If you do not want to see the results, clear the Display saved results check box.
    • In the File box, type or select a file name.

      If no file is listed, click Browse, and then select the file you want.

    • In the Layer box, type or select a layer.
  4. To include only the selected records in the layer, select the Buffer selected shapes only check box.
  5. Under Buffer Distances, do one of the following:
    • To buffer all of the selected shapes, click Simple.
    • To buffer all of the selected shapes according to their representation values, click Representation values.
    • To buffer all of the selected shapes according to an attribute, click Field, and then from the list, select the attribute that you want.
  6. In the Buffer levels box, type or select the number of levels that you want. Notice that when you add one or more levels, a corresponding column for each is added to the table, above.
  7. In the Units list, select a unit of measure.
  8. For each level in the table, above, type a number in the corresponding Level1, Level2, Level3 column and so on, as applicable, to set the width of each buffer.
  9. Click Next, and then proceed to Creating buffers - step 2.
