Creating buffers - step 2

In the second step of creating buffers, you determine the input, output, and buffer distances.

To complete step 2 of creating buffers

  1. Under Vertex Options, click the type of cornering for each vertex, as applicable:
    • Round
    • Bevel
    • Miter
  2. Under Line Options, click the side or sides on which the buffer will appear, as applicable:
    • Both sides
    • Left side
    • Right
  3. Below End style, click a style for the line ends, as applicable:
    • Round
    • Button
    • Projected
  4. Under Polygon Options, click how to apply the buffering to the polygons:
    • Outside and including polygons
    • Inside and outside the polygons
    • Only outside the polygons
    • Only inside the polygons
  5. Under Fields to Add, select one or more of the check boxes, as applicable.
    • SourceShapeID
    • Value: Includes the attribute values in the output layer if the buffer is based on an attribute and if overlapping buffers are kept separate.
    • BufferDistance: Lists the width of the buffer for each level in the output layer.
    • BufferLevel: Lists the levels in the output layer.

Each check box you select appears as a column with the corresponding name in the Attribute Manager window. When a field is not supported by your data type, the corresponding check box is unavailable.

  6. Under Output Areas, do one of the following:
    • To combine the shapes where the buffers overlap, click Combine.
    • To keep each buffer separate, click Keep Separate.
  7. Click Finish.
