For example, suppose you are working on a large area. You divide the area into sub-blocks and create projects for each. By working on the separate projects you can isolate errors that would be difficult to spot if they were in one massive project. When you are satisfied with the separate projects, you can build the one massive project by importing the TPs from all the projects instead of collecting the same points again.
When you import the TPs into a project, you can import them as is or add a prefix to help you differentiate the imported TPs from others in the project and prevent duplication of the descriptors.
