Changing layer properties

The Layer Manager window features a table with object names listed in rows. Properties of each object are listed in the columns.

By observing the properties, you can asses the state of the layers in the current project. If necessary, you can make changes to various items specific to the layers you are using.

For you to make changes to the properties, the layer must be open and the map must be active. When you make changes to the properties, the corresponding items on the Maps tab are also updated automatically.

The aspects of the table in the Layer Manager window are described as follows:

Name
The name of the layer.

To change the name of layer, click the cell, and then enter the name you want.

Layer Visible
The visibility of the layer.

A check mark appears in the cell to indicate that the layer is visible. To turn off the visibility, click the cell to remove the check mark. To turn off all layers, click the cell of the associated map or area. To turn on the visibility, click the relevant cell again.

Legend Items Visible
With data that has a legend, the visibility of items in the legend.

A check mark appears in the cell to indicate that the item is visible. To turn off the visibility, click the cell to remove the check mark. To turn off all items, click the cell of the associated map or area. To turn on the visibility, click the relevant cell again.

Read-only
Whether a layer is writable; that is, if the layer can be modified.

To make the item read-only, click the relevant cell to display a check mark. To make the layer writable, click the cell to remove the check mark. To make all items read-only or writable, click the cell of the associated map or area, as applicable.

When a layer is read-only, a red x appears beside the layer on the Maps tab.

Layer Priority
The priority, or order, of the layer.

A layer with a higher priority is displayed on top of a layer with a lower priority. Any changes you make are updated automatically on the Maps tab.

You can also set the priority of a layer on the Maps tab. For information on changing the priority of a layer on the Maps tab, see .

Tip: The priority of a layer can cause one layer to mask another in the view pane. If you cannot see a layer that is set to be visible, check the order of the layer to see if a layer is above the one you want, thus preventing you from seeing it.

Zoom Scale Active
Whether a zoom scale is active; that is, if the layer can be zoomed to the scale defined in the Min. Zoom Scale and Max. Zoom Scale boxes, respectively.

A check mark appears in the cell to indicate that the zoom scale is active according to the values. To turn on the zoom scale, click the cell to display the check mark. To turn on all items, click the cell of the associated map or area. To turn off the zoom scale, click the relevant cell again.

For more information, see Using Zoom Scale.

Min. Zoom Scale
When applicable, the minimum scale to which the layer can be zoomed.

The value you specify is in relation to one, where x is the value; that is, 1:x.

Max. Zoom Scale
When applicable, the maximum scale to which the layer can be zoomed.

The value you specify is in relation to one, where x is the value; that is, 1:x.

Selectable
With vector segments, whether shapes can be selected for modification or removal.

To make shapes of a segment selectable, click the relevant cell to display a check mark. To prevent shapes from being selectable, click the cell to remove the check mark. To make all items selectable or nonselectable, click the cell of the associated map or area, as applicable.

When a segment is selectable, you can select one or more shapes in the segment, and then modify or remove shapes, as necessary.

You can use this feature to "lock" the current selection. To do so, you must first select the shape or shapes you want to lock from the vector segment in Attribute Manager, or by using the Selection tools or Vector Editing tools. After you select the shapes you want to lock, clear the relevant check mark in the Selectable column. To unlock the selected shapes, click the relevant cell in the Selectable column to display the check mark.

Transparency Active
Whether the transparency of a layer is active.

A check mark appears in the cell to indicate that the transparency is active according to the values. To turn on the transparency, click the cell to display the check mark. To turn on all items, click the cell of the associated map or area. To turn off the transparency, click the relevant cell again.

Transparency Value
The value of the pixel or pixels to which to apply the transparency.

The pixel value you enter determines the degree to which you can see the imagery beneath. For example, to assign a transparency where zero is transparent for the red band, 20 for the green band, and 100 for the blue band, enter the value in the following format:

With a grayscale image, you need only specify a single value. For example, to assign a transparency where the pixel value of 10 is transparent in the image, enter 10.

Opacity Active
Whether the opacity of a layer is active.

A check mark appears in the cell to indicate that the opacity is active according to the values. To turn on the opacity, click the cell to display the check mark. To turn on all items, click the cell of the associated map or area. To turn off the opacity, click the relevant cell again.

Opacity %
The level of the opacity.

For example, a value of 100 means the entire image can be seen (and the layers beneath cannot be seen). A value of 0 means the image cannot be seen at all (and the layers beneath can be seen entirely).

View NoData Value
Whether the NoData values are visible.

A check mark appears in the cell to indicate that the NoData values are visible. To turn on the display, click the cell to display the check mark. To turn on all items, click the cell of the associated map or area. To turn off the display, click the relevant cell again.

NoData Color
The color by which to display NoData values.

To select a color, click the palette, and then click the color you want. To select from additional colors, click More.
