Image channel information

When you select an image-channel item in the topmost pane of the File Utility window, the title of the lowermost pane changes to Image Channel Information, and information about the image channel is displayed.

With a PCIDSK file, the information includes:

With a nonPCIDSK file, only the description, size, and type of the image channel are displayed. With a PCIDSK file, you can modify the description.

To make changes to the description
  1. In the table under Image Channel Information, in the Description row, click the table cell to the right, and then make changes, as necessary.
  2. To save your changes, press Enter.

Your changes are also saved when you click outside the table.

The descriptive text for an information item associated with a single image channel has a specific format, shown as follows:
nnnnnL[typ] program Descriptive Message... dd-mmm-yy

The text is described in the following table.

Text Description
nnnnn Channel number
L Channel is locked (read-only)
[typ] Any of the following data types:
  • 8U: 8-bit unsigned
  • 16S: 16-bit signed
  • 16U: 16-bit unsigned
  • 32R: 32-bit real
program Software program that last wrote to the channel
dd-mm-yy Date information was last written to the channel
Note: Because a 32-bit integer image is represented in GDB as 32-bit real, some loss of precision may occur.

The following is an example of an image-channel description:

1L[ 8U] MCD 0.45 - 0.52 micrometres: Blue-Green 1-OCT-2020
2 [ 8U] MCD 0.52 - 0.60 micrometres: Green 1-OCT-2020
Note: An image channel can also contain an Overview item, which displays resolution levels of the channel overview.

About channel locking

A channel can be either locked or unlocked. A locked channel is read-only and cannot be modified. An unlocked channel is writable and you can make changes to it, as necessary.

In the table under Image Channel Information, in the Locking row, the state of the channel locking is displayed. You can switch between the Write Locked and Not Locked states by clicking the available button in the row.
