Creating a new raster layer

A raster layer is used most often as background for a vector-based map. You can also use a raster image for a thematic map.

On the Maps tab, an image layer is always a sub-level of an area. You can use image files of various types. The following table provides information on the supported types of image files.

Data Type Pixel values
8-bit 0 to 255
16-bit signed -32,768 to 32,767
16-bit unsigned 0 to 65,535
32-bit real -3.4E38 to 3.4E38

To use create a new raster layer

  1. On the Maps tab, right-click an area, and then click New Raster Layer.
  2. In the New Raster Layer window, under Layer Type, click the type of layer you want.
You can select from the following:
    • Grayscale
    • RGB
    • Pseudocolor
  3. Under Data Type, click a data type for the layer.
You can select from the following:
    • 8-bit
    • 16-bit signed
    • 16-bit unsigned
    • 32-bit
If necessary, type or select a value in the Initialization Value box. To set the value as the NoData value, make sure the Set as "No Data Value" check box is selected.
  4. Under Georeferencing, click the source of the georeferencing for the layer.
You can select from the following:
    • Use Area Georeferencing
    • Use Layer Georeferencing

To use the georeferencing of another layer, select the layer you want from the list.

    • User - entered

To use custom georeferencing, enter the appropriate information.
