Organizing and editing layers

The following table describes many of the common tasks you will perform frequently when working with layers on the Maps tab.

To Do this
Hide a layer Clear the check box beside the layer.

You can also right-click the layer, click Properties, and then on the General tab of the <layer_type> Properties dialog box, clear the Visible check box.

Show a layer Select the check box beside the layer.

You can also right-click the layer, click Properties, and then on the General tab of the <layer_type> Properties dialog box, select the Visible check box

Make a layer inactive Right-click the layer, click Properties, and then on the General tab of the <layer_type> Properties dialog box, select the Read-only check box.

Notice that on the Maps tab a Red X appears beside the layer, indicating it is inactive.

Make a layer active Right-click the layer, click Properties, and then on the General tab of the <layer_type> Properties dialog box, clear the Read-only check box.

Notice that on the Maps tab a Pencil appears beside the layer, indicating it is active.

Move a layer up or down (reorder) Drag the layer up or down to the position you want.
Copy a layer Right-click the layer, and then click Copy.
Paste a copied layer Right-click the area in which you want to paste the layer, and then click Paste.
Remove a layer Right-click the layer, and then click Remove from Area.
Note: The layer is removed only from the map. It is not removed from the data file.
Rename a layer
  1. Right-click the layer, and then click Rename.
  2. Type a name, and then press Enter.
