Setting up custom histogram-tail trim

You can set left and right histogram-tail trimming for each color gun in an image. This can be useful to remove outlier pixels—that is, very small or very large values—from the histogram so the enhancement can stretch the meaningful pixel values over the full range of the display.

You can use either of two color modes, RGB or Per color gun. In RGB mode, the value you specify for left trim and right trim is used for all color guns (red, green, and blue) when applied. In Per color gun mode, you can specify the left and right trim individually for red, green, and blue.

Histogram-tail trim applies to all enhancements, regardless of layer.

The view is updated when you click Enhancments on the Enhancement toolbar.

A simple histogram-tail trim is to use one of the pre-existing choices and apply it equally to the low (left) and high (right) ends of the histogram. In the Histogram Tail Trim window, you can set up more sophisticated handling.

To set up custom histogram-tail trim

  1. On the Enhancement toolbar, click the arrow beside Enhancements, point to Set Trim %, and then on the menu that appears, click Custom.

The Histogram Tail Trim panel appears.

  2. Under Color mode, click RGB or Per color gun according to the mode you want to use:
    • If you selected RGB, type or select a value in the Left trim % and Right trim % boxes, as applicable.
    • If you selected Per color gun, beside Red, Green, Blue, type or select a value in the Left trim % and Right trim % boxes, respectively, as applicable.

You can now apply this histogram-tail trim each time you click Enhancements.
