Exporting and translating a file

When you export a file, the data is translated to the format you select. You can also use this command to, if necessary, create a new file of selected layers only.

After you specify the (source and) destination file and output format, you can select the layers from the source file to include in the destination file.

To export and translate a file

  1. On the File menu, click Export To.

The Translate (Export) File window appears.

  2. To select a source file, click Browse, if necessary.

That is, if you already have a file open in the File Utility window when you click the Export To command, the file appears as the source file in the Translate (Export) File window. If you do not have a file open, click Browse, and then select the source file you want.

  3. In the Destination file box, type the path and file name of the file you want or, to specify a file, click Browse.
Note: The output file must not already exist.
  4. In the Output format list, select a format for the output file.

The layers in the source file appear under Source Layers.

  5. If applicable, click Options to specify file creation options for the destination file.
  6. Under Source Layers, select one or more layers to include in the output file and, if necessary, do one or more of the following:
    • To filter the list by layer type, in the View list, select the type you want.
    • To select all layers in the list, click Select All.

You can also select a group or range of layers.

  7. Click Add.

The layer or layers you selected appear under Destination Layers. To remove a layer or layers, select one or more, and then click Remove. To change the order of the layers, select one or more layers, and then click Up or Down, as applicable.

  8. Click Translate.

The output file is created based on the information you specified.
