Descriptors and history

Each layer in a GDB database can have a description string and a series of history records. The description string is one line with a maximum of 80 characters. Many formats cannot support this; attempts to modify the description have no effect, and the descriptor string is synthetically generated (for example, Vector layer %d).

Also, each layer can have a list of history records that indicate the operations that have occurred. Well-behaved GDB applications write a new record of history information when a data layer is updated.
