Data product name and description

KOMPSAT-3 is an electro-optical high-resolution Korean observation mission of the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), which supports various imaging modes:
  • Strip
  • One Path Stereo
  • Multi-Pointing
  • Wide Area Along
  • Wide Area Arbitrary
The sister of KOMPSAT-3 is KOMPSAT-3A. Each sensor has an identical satellite bus and similar payload. The lower orbit altitude of KOMPSAT-3A (528 km) compared to KOMPSAT-3 (685 km) provides KOMPSAT-3A with a finer spatial resolution.
Note: The information provided herein is based on the data distributor's documentation cited under References.

Notes

MS1 (Blue): 450 - 520
MS2 (Green): 520 - 600
MS3 (Red): 630 - 690
MS4 (NIR): 760 - 900
PAN (Panchromatic): 450 - 900

K03 MS: 2.8 (2.0)+ (14-bit)
K03A MS: 2.2 (14-bit)

K03 PAN : 0.7 (0.5)+ (14-bit)
K03A PAN : 0.55 (14-bit)

Strip mode (mono): 16 x 4000
Wide Area (mono): 48 x 100
Single Pass (stereo): 16 x 200

Maximum off-nadir pointing angle (pitch): ±30 degrees.

* Resolution is always nadir position unless noted otherwise.

Kompsat-3 image data is available at sensor ground sample distance (GSD) of 2.8 meters MS, 0.7 meters PAN or product GSD of 2.0 meters MS, 0.5 meters PAN.

Kompsat-3 image data is available in three processing levels:
  • Level 1R (Corrected for radiometric and sensor distortions)
  • Level 1O (Ortho-ready)
  • Level 1G (Georectified without GCP - Orthorectified Imagery using SRTM DEM)
Each product is provided as a bundle (pan + four multispectral) or as pansharpened (four pansharpened bands).
Processing level Horizontal accuracy (m) Description/notes
1R

1R (Basic): 285
1R (Option): 70

Level 1R is corrected for radiometric and sensor distortions. The difference of relative radiometric response between detectors is corrected and internal detector geometry and misregistrations between detectors are corrected, when applicable.
1O 70 Level 1O is known as "ortho-ready". It is corrected for geometric distortions and projected to UTM. Level 1O includes all radiometric corrections and sensor corrections applied to Level 1R processing. Optical distortions and terrain effects are corrected by using average height over the region. The final product is projected to UTM coordinate.
1G 70 Level 1G is corrected for geometric distortions and projected to UTM. Level 1G includes all radiometric corrections and sensor corrections applied to Level 1R processing. Optical distortions are corrected and terrain effects are corrected using a coarse digital elevation model (DEM); namely, SRTM DEM for Level 1R. The final product is projected to UTM coordinate.

Distribution disk files

A KOMPSAT-3 data set is organized in a specific folder structure on disk. GDB uses this folder structure and the file names to identify the data product type.

Warning: Data sets for this sensor are organized in a specific folder structure on disk. GDB uses this structure and the file names to identify the data product type. Do not alter the folder structure or any file names prior to data ingestion to ensure the image data and auxiliary information are imported correctly.
You can open a KOMPSAT-3 data set by selecting the *._aux.xml file. Depending on the CATALYST Professional program you use, you may be prompted to load either the multispectral (MS) or panchromatic (PAN) data. For example, in CATALYST Professional Focus, in the File Selector window, after you select the *_aux.xml file you may be prompted to select from MS or PAN. In CATALYST Professional EASI, Python, or in another text-based program, the input file name can have the following formats:
  • K3_20130501182829_05101_19871330_L1R_Aux.xml-MS
  • K3_20130501182829_05101_19871330_L1R_Aux.xml-PAN
Enter the full path and file name plus -MS for a multispectral image or -PAN for a panchromatic image.

When opening a Kompsat-3 data set, the files read by GDB are as described in the following table.

File name Format Required Contents/details
*_aux.xml Extensible Markup Language Yes Key file name. Contains metadata that applies to the data set.
*.tif GeoTIFF Yes Image data, one file per spectral band. With large panchromatic images, the data is distributed tiled (one image file per tile).
*.til Text No Tile map file for panchromatic images greater than 4 GB.
*.rpc Text Yes Rational function model, one file per spectral band.

Returned data for supported format

KOMPSAT-3 data can be opened directly in its raw vendor format or imported into a PCIDSK (*.pix) file using the key file name (*_aux.xml). For optimal processing, use the PCIDSK format.

The data structure, after it is opened by GDB, is as described in the following table.
